Query by LeRoy: Are there great tent websites for camping along the Appalachian Trail in the Shenandoah National Park?
I am planning a section hike in the Shenandoah National Park in September/October. I’ve studied the maps and SNP guide book. Any details or suggestions that can be provided concerning camping web sites near the trail — especially in the Southern and Central Districts — would be appreciated. Considering that the park can be crowded in the fall I would like to prevent the shelters/huts, specially on the weekends.
In AT guide books, the trail log will mention camping/tenting websites, but the gide book on the SNP seldom mentions any. I am familiar with the backcountry camping specifications and restrictions (the Park has a genuinely wonderful brochure), but I figure those who have in fact hiked the trail would have the ideal suggestions to wherever to find pretty, uncrowded camp internet sites along the AT.
Thanks for the information.

Accommodations
Throughout the length of the trail there are many shelters and camp websites obtainable for hikers. The shelters, generally called lean-tos, are usually open 3-walled structures with a wooden floor. Some shelters are a great deal much more complicated in structure nevertheless, for the most part function opposed to type is the focus in their building. Shelters are spaced much less than a day’s hike apart, most often close to a water supply and with a privy. They commonly have spaces for tent websites in the vicinity as well. It is recommended normally to carry a tent when overnighting on the Trail, because shelters may well be filled to capacity.
These shelters are commonly very well-maintained by community volunteers and kept in beneficial condition, while in spite of this mice and other rodents frequently make their residences inside or nearby. Pretty much all shelters have one particular or much more pre-hung food hangers (generally consisting of a short nylon cord with an upside-down tuna can suspended halfway down its length) for hikers to hang their food bags on. In hiker lingo these are in some cases referred to as “mouse trapezes”, and though they commonly avoid mice from reaching hung food, they are not by any usually means foolproof. Another solution is to hang one’s food from a tree branch or in between two trees, making use of the standard bear bagging system, which is encouraged in bear nation.
