Query by Ikace: What to do on a camping trip with 52 young children and 14 other leaders?
I’m leaving on a camping trip tomorrow for the initial time as a leader. I’m definitely not confident or something about this. I’m the youngest leader (17) and even though I do know the other leaders relatively nicely, I’m just genuinely nervous about it all.
I don’t know how to behave when the little ones have gone to bed and we are all sitting together…when is it ok to go to sleep, for instance?
Does anyone have some final-minute assistance?
Thanks!

go into west virginia….head toward either the canaan valley or dolly sodds areas. There is also Blackwater Falls. If you live in southeastern ohio, these areas would be reachable within 2-3 hours max. Good luck and enjoy.
All the state parks are pretty nice but expensive. You don’t say what style of camping you are doing. Tent, camper, backpacking? Hocking hills is very nice. Any of the reservoirs (Burr Oak, Seneca lake) have camping. Over in your part of the state you are not too far from Ohio Power rec area. Good fishing and cheap camping there, if you are into that sort of thing. You can get a free permit on line. These people may be a corp. but they have the cheapest camping in Ohio. Look around their pages. Here is a link to apply for a permit. http://www.aep.com/environmental/recreation/recland/permit.aspx But West Virginia is very nice, if you want to go that far. Spruce Knob area.
Google is your friend here, you are lucky there are tons of resources. Here are some good ones I found:
Scavenger hunts are a great idea, you can make it longer or shorter for time, and include items you want the kids to look for and think about related to any other lessons or activities you are doing. So if you have other activities on animals maybe have them look for animal tracks.

these ones are different and fun:

Here are some good craft ideas, it might be nice to have a few things you can do under cover or inside in case the weather is nasty.

And also a good idea to have some games or high energy activities

And this site has as section on ongoing riddles to make them think

I am not sure what age kids you will be working with, so some of these ideas may not work, but I hope they get you started.
Haha Cynica….yup!
Ok…first thing. Panic thee not. Sure you sleep. You need sleep just like the others do. But you’re on duty sleep. Wake-able if anything needs sorting. Not every night. There will be a rota of people on duty.
And if it does need sorting…well, you know what to do don’t you?
Get it sorted!
YOU! QUIT MESSING! SLEEP…NOOOOOOOWW! Extra duty in the morning. Be up early! “Ooooohhh…Missss….Oooihh”
QUIT moaning! Sleep!
Stern look in the morning……I’ll be looking at you .
And as nice as pie when it all works out well….special nice.
OK? Happy?
Sgt Hard Iron just laid down the Law…tomorrow night life will be better. Or else!
OK, just put it on. I wasn’t that sort either. But I still got to be a sergeant….UK spelling. By that time I had enough practice at putting it on anyway.
Next thing is….be Mom and Dad to all of them. Be their friend. Leaders are friends who help.
Not last night was I? I was rotten.
Nope…but that was being a friend to all the others who were trying to sleep.
So you are two in one. Friend and disciplinarian. Both matter. Camps need them
So does the military. It keeps things in order. Everyone is better off and happier that way. They know how things are.
Third thing…how much do you know? Some clever pimply kid knows a lot. He swotted up on it.
OK, just keep it sweet…well done fella…don’t make it a duel.
That’s why he let you know how much he knows…he wants to feel superior. No duel, no loser.
Take the wind out of his sails by just being nice. Congratulations, you know all that!
Leadership then. No Colonel knows as much as all the troopers together in his unit but it doesn’t stop him being the Colonel.
Only one more.
Keep it fun. Camps are supposed to be fun. Only do the Big Toughie when you have to.
More fun, more learning how it’s done. Coo I’m a poet and didn’t know it.
ENJOY! That’s an order….Oooh, right then…err, enjoyment squad A_ten SHUN……
Not like that.
SKOD! ….SHUN! They can play soldiers.
Then play games. Get them worn out in the evenings. They sleep then. Racing games, skipping and jumping games, then a quiet game to settle down again.
Then supper, washes and sleeeepies….tired out.
Easier then. Not so many bad calls at night. Sleep easy.
Don’t panic. You’ll still be alive at the end of camp. And you’ll be a bit bigger than you were.
They’ll help with that. There are other leaders too. Keep smiling.
And keep the little ones smiling. Camp is fun. Honest.
Send the children home happy. It’s what they went there for.
